Divorce filings common during holiday season

Couples in Charlotte might be more likely to file for divorce in January than in many other months. The two most popular months for divorce filings are August and March, but just after the new year is another common time.

There are a few reasons for this. One is that people do not want to divorce during the holidays. This may be particularly true if there are children. Some people may see it as giving the children one last family Christmas together before they split up.

The holidays can be an emotional time, and this can work on people with troubled marriages in different ways. Some people may find that their feelings of unhappiness become overwhelming during this time. Others might become so caught up in the good feelings that they are able to convince themselves that their marriages might work out after all for the duration of the holidays. They might then realize as they return to their usual lives after the highs of the holiday season that their marriage must come to an end.

Even when a person feels divorce is the best decision, the process may be difficult. There may be property that needs to be divided, and if there are children, parents will have to decide on a child custody arrangement. It is important for people to take care of themselves financially and also make decisions that are in the best interests of their children. People might be able to work out creative solutions for property division that suit their situation. For example, if one person can afford to maintain the home on a single income, that person might want to keep the house while the other takes assets of comparable value. An attorney may be able to help a person articulate goals in a divorce and stick to them during negotiations.
